June Book Club Pick: The Mad Wife by Meagan Church
This month’s June book club pick is The Mad Wife by Meagan Church, a historical fiction novel with plenty of psychological suspense throughout the story.
Set in the 1950s, the novel follows Lulu Mayfield, a wife and mother trying to maintain the image of the perfect life while quietly struggling beneath the surface. When a new neighbor moves in, Lulu becomes convinced something isn’t right. As her suspicions grow, so do the questions: Is Lulu uncovering the truth, or is she slowly losing her grip on reality?
I was immediately drawn to this book because it combines historical fiction, family dynamics, motherhood, and suspense in a way that feels perfect for a book club discussion. It explores the pressure women face to appear happy, the expectations placed on mothers and wives, and how quickly people can dismiss a woman’s concerns when she refuses to fit the mold.
If you enjoy books that keep you guessing while also giving you plenty to think about, I have a feeling this one will spark some great conversations this month.

Why I Chose This June Book Club Pick
Full disclosure: I can’t take credit for this month’s selection. My friend Katie recommended The Mad Wife, and after reading the description, I immediately understood why she thought it would make a great book club read.
What stood out to me was the combination of historical fiction and psychological suspense. I love books that give us interesting characters to talk about, but I especially love books that leave readers questioning what they would do in the same situation. Between the themes of motherhood, identity, reputation, and whether we can trust our own perceptions, this feels like the kind of story that will lead to some really interesting discussions.
I also think the 1950s setting adds another layer to the story. The expectations placed on women during that era create a fascinating backdrop for a novel about being seen, believed, and understood.
This sounds like one of those books that keeps you thinking long after you finish the final chapter, and those are often the best book club picks.
The Vibe of the June Book Club Pick
This isn’t a cozy feel-good read. It’s the kind of book that slowly builds tension and leaves you questioning what’s really happening. If you enjoy stories that blend historical fiction with psychological suspense and complex female characters, this June book club pick may be for you.
- 1950s suburban tension
- Psychological suspense
- Unreliable narrator
- Domestic drama
- Secrets behind closed doors
- Strong motherhood themes
- Slow-burn mystery
- “Something feels off” energy
- Thought-provoking book club discussions
- Women’s fiction with a darker edge
Who This Book Is For
This book is a great fit if you enjoy:
- Historical fiction with a strong female protagonist
- Psychological suspense that keeps you guessing
- Domestic dramas with secrets beneath the surface
- Books that explore motherhood, identity, and societal expectations
- Unreliable narrators and stories that make you question what is really happening
- Character-driven novels that spark discussion
If your favorite book club conversations happen when everyone has a different interpretation of the story, this one should provide plenty to talk about.
However, if you’re looking for a lighthearted summer read or a fast-paced thriller, this may not be the best fit. The Mad Wife appears to be more of a slow-burn story that gradually builds tension while exploring the pressures women face behind closed doors.
For readers who enjoy historical fiction with a darker edge and plenty of psychological intrigue, this month’s pick sounds like a fascinating choice.
