Making Your Home Child-Safe: 4 Essential Strategies

Home is meant to be the safest place a child can be. That is why it is our duty as parents to deal with any potential hazards. Making your home child-safe is essential to ensure the safety and well-being of your little one. This is important whether it’s a child you are currently expecting, or you are thinking about being a foster parent or guardian. If you are wondering what is foster care, it’s a great way to be a parent to a child, but you’ll need to make sure the home is safe first.

Remove Choking Hazards

The sad truth of the matter is that there are many potential choking hazards in the home. Of course, as a parent, part of our job is to identify these and remove them so our little one is safe.

Be sure to do a sweep of your home both before the baby is born, and again as they start to become more mobile. When they begin scooting, crawling, and walking, there will be all-new hazards to deal with.

Look out for things like pins, small toys, coins, and even deflated balloons. Take special care with batteries of all kinds, too, as these can not only be choking hazards but are full of nasty acid that can be fatal if ingested.

Minimize the Risk of Fire

Another significant risk to the safety of your children in the home is fire. In fact, both burns and smoke inhalation are two of the most common injuries occurring in the home. The good news is that there are several things that you can do to minimize the risks associated with fire in the home.

The first is to avoid open fires where possible and, if you do use them, be sure to invest in a robust child-proof fireguard that won’t get too hot. Next, be sure to install fire and smoke alarms through the home and test them regularly.

You should also keep any flammable liquids and chemicals outside of the home. Finally, investing in good quality fire extinguishers is a smart idea, as well.

Prevent Poisoning

There are many poison hazards around the home that we parents need to be aware of. Cleaning chemicals can be incredibly risky and can cause a child that has consumed them to become very sick.

In particular, it is essential to keep things like laundry pods out of the reach of children. Not only do they look a little bit like candy, but there have been several cases where consumption has been fatal recently.

It’s not only cleaning products that can be poisonous, either. There are some things like plants and mold that grow around the home that can be problematic as well. With that in mind, it’s always best to check plants both in the home and garden to make sure they are safe when touched or ingested.

Additionally, if you come across black mold in your home, getting a professional setup like Advanced Catastrophe Technologies to come in and remove it for you is a smart move. After all, it has been linked to allergies and breathing problems, especially when it comes to younger children.

Also, pests can pose serious risks by contaminating food or triggering allergies. If you’re dealing with unwanted insects or rodents, consider contacting Terminix Henderson NV for professional pest control solutions that help keep your home safer and healthier for your kids.

Protect Children From Electric Shock

Our homes run on electricity and, while we wouldn’t want to be without it, it can pose a real danger to our children. That is why it’s essential to use things like socket protectors when your kids are young. The socket protectors will prevent children from sticking their fingers or other objects into the electrical outlets.

Also, be sure to unplug and remove any electrical items such as hairdryers and curling irons while your child is in the bathroom. This will prevent them from being accidentally knocked into the bathtub or sink.

Make sure to keep kids out of dangerous areas

Depending on the age of the kids, one often-overlooked way to improve home safety is through kitchen remodeling. Updating your kitchen with child-proof features—such as soft-close cabinets, rounded countertop edges, and secure storage for hazardous items—can significantly reduce risks. By incorporating family-friendly designs and modern safety enhancements, you can create a space that is both functional and safe for young children.

You need to do everything you can to keep them away from dangerous parts of the house. This could involve locking doors on certain rooms that you don’t want them to get inside. Alternatively, it may be childproofing certain cupboards and cabinets where you keep dangerous chemicals. You may need to get a garage door service to prevent them from getting in this area where there are tools, vehicles etc.

Top Things To Do When You Find Pests In Your Home

No one wants to find they are sharing their home with pests but sometimes you have no control over it. Pests, such as insects or rodents like mice or rats, can pop up out of nowhere. Knowing how to best deal with (and hopefully prevent) pests, will help to combat any future household invasions.

Noticed a sign that you’ve got pests in your home or garden? Follow these tips to help prevent and deal with any pest issues in your home.

Contact your Landlord or House Management

If you are a renter, this one is for you. Sometimes your agreement for the property you are in will say that pests will be dealt with for you if you contact the landlord or agency that manages your property. This can be great as it stops you having to deal with it yourself and also means you do not have to foot the bill for the service.

Contact Pest Control

If you are not able to deal with the situation yourself or do not feel comfortable doing so, then contact pest control to help you deal with the invasion. Pest control specialists are the best people to call in this situation.

Although having to pay out money is not ideal, it is necessary. When it comes to pests they can cause a great deal of damage to your home and garden. It will end up costing more money further down the line if not dealt with now.

Keep Your Home Clean and Tidy

To help prevent pests, either after you have dealt with an infestation or if you are just looking to be cautious, you need to make sure certain areas around the house are kept clean and tidy.

Pests can vary from rodents to insects, and most pests are attracted to food and drink. This makes it hard to keep on top of as you probably have a lot of food drink around your house.

Things like making sure your trash cans are clean, not overflowing, and the lid is on correctly will help. If you offer pests the ideal environment to thrive in, they will multiply extremely quickly. This is obviously not something you want to see.

It’s also a good idea to clean up any spills or dropped food right away, as otherwise, this will attract pests. Pests can also be attracted to things like wet and damp wood or areas that remain damp.

This means if you keep wood close to or in your house and it becomes damp and cannot dry then it may attract pests. That is why it is best practice to keep wood further from your house. That way, any pests that are attracted to the wood are not living as close to your home.

What To Do When You Find Pests In Your Home

The above tips will prepare you for what you can do when pests get into your home. Plus, it will help you prevent pest invasions from occurring in the first place or from happening again.

Moving With Kids: How To Make It Fun

Moving isn’t always a fun experience, and when you have kids it can be even more difficult. Sometimes, however, you just have no choice or the long-term benefits outweigh the current stress. It’s for those reason that you have to work out a way to make moving with kids as fun as possible.

Right now, making moving with kids fun may not seem possible. By the time that you have finished reading this article, however, you should have some good ideas as to how you can do it.

How to Make Moving With Kids Fun

Let Them Help Pack

The first thing that you can do is let them help pack the house up. Of course, certain things need to go in certain boxes. Other things need to be wrapped up safely in bubble wrap to ensure that they don’t break or get damaged during the move.

Depending on the age of your children, they may be able to help with the wrapping and the putting in boxes carefully. If not, then you can always ask them to bring you things if they want to be involved.

Remember that if they don’t want to help, they don’t have to. It might even be simpler for you if they are watching something on YouTube while you’re packing!

But, if they do want to help, try to give them things that won’t break. It doesn’t matter if things are squished into a box as long as they aren’t going to get damaged. Toys, for example can be put into the box any which way they want, so let them do this whenever possible.

Consider asking them to pack up things in their bedroom or pack clothes from out of a dresser. If you have a play room, having your child start there is a good idea. When you do this, your child won’t be anxious that things may get left behind.

Keep Them Involved In The Process

An important part of keeping it fun for them is keeping them involved in the process. It’s never fun to feel as though you’re being left out, especially as a child.

When children feel like they are being left out of something, this tends to be when they start acting out. You don’t need a tantrum or negative behavior from your child throughout the moving process, so let them help you with whatever you’re doing.

Just make sure that if you hire a service like a moving company, your child doesn’t get in the way of the movers. Give them simple tasks to complete that will keep them occupied, and this should do the trick.

Turn It Into A Game

One last thing that you can try is turning the whole thing into a game. This is going to work better if you have more than one child because you can set it up like a competition.

Come up with small tasks that they can compete and see who can get theirs done first. The winner gets a little treat or surprise each time. Then, you can do this repeatedly throughout the process.

Another option is to get them to complete tasks throughout the day, and the person who gets through the most by the end of the day wins the treat. Turning it into a game makes moving with kids fun, and it’ll keep the kids excited and helpful.

Moving With Kids – How to Make it Fun

Moving is stressful enough on it’s own, but when kids are involved it’s even more stressful. While these tips won’t make the situation stress-free, they will help to make the process more fun. Any little enjoyment will help, and keeping the kids content is part of the battle.

8 Signs That It Is The Right Time To Move Your Family

If you’ve been thinking it is time to move your family, there are a few things you’ll need to consider first to ensure that it’s the right choice. After all, moving isn’t an easy feat.

Whether you’re moving around the corner or to a completely different city, it is expensive and takes a lot of planning to get right. Here are the signs to look for that will give you an idea of whether this is the right choice for you and it’s time to book the movers.

Signs That It Is Time to Move

1. The House Has Started To Feel Too Small

Has the house started to feel tight and cramped? This often happens when you have growing kids or you want to expand your family further. Kids barely take up any room when they’re small, but they soon grow and accumulate things that take up space. If your house has started to feel too small, it could be a good time to look into moving.

2. You/The Kids Don’t Have Enough Privacy

Privacy is important, whether you’re a parent or the child. Children need privacy too, and they need to feel like they have a space to call their own. If your kids are having to share bedrooms, it is a good time to look at getting a bigger place. This way everybody can have their own space.

3. You’re Thinking About it More and More

If you’re even thinking about moving, that’s a sign alone that it’s a good time to move. If you find yourself constantly thinking about it, it could be time to look into what you’d have to do. It could be a good time to start exploring movers, and figuring out how this would affect school, work, and the rest of the family.

4. There’s Too Much Empty Space

Perhaps your kids have actually flown the nest. This can leave parents with more empty space than they know what to do with and leave them feeling like they are rattling around an empty home. A smaller, more cozy place could be the right choice in this case.

5. The Commute is A Killer

Commuting to work can add hours to the working day. If you’re getting fed up with having to be up hours and hours before you start and not getting back until late, perhaps moving closer to your workplace could help.

6. You Want Your Kids To Go To A Better School

You can’t just cherry-pick the best school for your kids – you actually need to live in the vicinity. Some schools offer school-of-choice, but the best schools normally don’t offer that option. If you want to make sure your kids go to a good school, moving might be the only option.

7. You’re Having To Make Too Many Upgrades

If you’re having to make too many upgrades and do too much DIY to make your home livable, then it’s probably costing you more than it’s worth. Consider if moving could save hassle and money in the long run.

Finding a home that only requires seasonal maintenance could be life-changing for you. Then, you wouldn’t have to worry about things breaking down or needing to be replaced. You could focus on other things and preparing your home will be easier.

8. People You Care About Live Far Away

Living close to the people you care about can seriously enrich your quality of life. If you don’t see as many of them as you’d like, moving closer could be the best thing for your family. More importantly, it would help if you moved closer to your elderly family members like your parents and grandparents. Nothing brings joyful tears like seeing your kids play and enjoy their grandparent’s company.

Unfortunately, life can be demanding, making it impossible to travel miles to spend more time with the people you love. However, it’s never too late to remedy this. Moving closer is the best and most practical option.

If you have a sick family member living in a facility like the  Three Oaks Hospice & Palliative Care, it would be best to move nearby for apparent reasons. For one, you’ll be able to spend more time with them and help them live their final moments happily. Secondly, your family, especially your kids, will have a chance to meet and build a relationship with the people you care about.

Although a palliative and hospice center has its benefits like pain management, assisted living, and nursing care, you’d still want to be there for your loved ones. There’s no better time to move close by than when you have a chronically sick loved one that might not live for a long time. This is important not just to your loved ones but to you, too, as it’ll help you know that you were there during their last moments.

The Right Time To Move Your Family

Whatever the reason, it is important to recognize when it is the right time to move your family. It is a big decision that can’t be taken lightly, so recognizing the signs will help with the transition. If you have moved your family, was it for one of the reasons listed here or something else? How To Do Right By Your Family

Making long-term life decisions can be a very tough task, no matter how old or experienced you may be. Life is unpredictable, and 2020 is perhaps one of the crowning examples of that. However, it’s important to figure out how to do right by your family by coming to the best decision.

These long-term decisions could be anything from where you should live to where you should send your children to school. Even though making the decision might be stressful, it’s important to do it in the right way.

If you find yourself in a situation where you know you’ll be taking care of your parents as they age, have a discussion with your partner and parents to determine how to approach your combined futures. Caring for older adults in the same home may require moving to a new home or using a company such as Home Elevator Service to install an elevator in your existing home to help with mobility and independence. Regardless of what you decide together, communication is essential.

You can’t simply do what other families are doing. Remember that what is right for most people may not be right for you and your family.

While this article may offer insight and give tips, you still have to figure out for yourself what is best. You can only define that for yourself, but the following principles may help you along the way.

How to do Right By Your Family

Consider all Options

Determine which risks are involved with each decision. No matter how small the risk is, each decision you make carries one. Then, you have to consider how those risks might express themselves and how you can limit them.

If you can achieve that way of thinking, then odds are you’ll be more forthright in coming to a conclusion.

What’s Right For Them Now, And In The Future?

It’s important to consider what might be right for your family now and in the future. Those two things aren’t always so apparent. However, thinking along a timeline can help you make those decisions.

Perhaps you might wish to move but if you wait a year, you can have better options. Maybe waiting a year will give you a chance to find a good school for your kids.

It could be that you wish to move to a rural area, but when your children become teenagers, what if they need to find a job? Questions like this can help direct your actions.

Consider Your Finances

When you are trying to do right by your family, you have to think financially, too. After all, you have to be able to support them.

Maybe you could consider debt discharge with DTSS Restoring America’s Freedom. This could help cut back on monthly payments.

Additionally, you may want to consider finding a new job in a new area. If jobs are hard to come by in that area, you can consider making money online. You could start a blog, find freelance work, or find other remote jobs.

You can’t wait until after you’ve made a long-term decision to think about finances. Whatever is the best way forward, planning financially will help you. You have to be able to balance that alongside your perspective timeline.

Staying Unapologetic About Your Choices

There are no one-size-fits-all solutions for all families. What works for your family may not work for another. This is why it’s important to stay unapologetic about your decisions, and instead focus on what’s right for your family.

Studies show that families who stop comparing themselves to others tend to be happier. By staying unapologetic, you will be able to avoid the comparison trap. When you begin apologizing and explaining yourself, however, it can make you feel differently.

do right by your family, making long-term decisions, help making decisions, family decisions, big changes for families

Balance Needs, Priorities, And Benefits For All The Family

To the extent that you can, it’s important to balance the needs of all of your family members. Perhaps you wish to move to an area near a brilliant art school, but it requires an hour’s commute to reach anything else. This will be inconvenient for you, and can also cause problems for your teenagers.

Maybe you’re considering a move, but the unpredictability caused by Covid makes it best to wait. Whether this is due to a lack of job prospects or concerns with schooling, it is important to consider.

Another priority to consider is your extended family. If you are close to them, consider how often you would be able to see them. This could be an important factor that should be discussed.

When you balance the needs of your family, you can come to the best compromise. You may not be able to make everyone happy, but it’s important to consider all aspects.

Remember That You are Doing What is Best

Be confident in your ability to do right by your family. As long as you follow these tips and consider all aspects of the decision, you will be just fine. It’s normal to question yourself but, at the end of the day, know that you are doing your best.

How to Keep Your Home Clean and Free of Unwanted Dirt And Mess

Photo: Unsplash

Have you ever had chaos in your home and did not know where to start? Even if your house looks like a bombed-out landscape, you can clean it in 24 hours by following some simple steps. Plus, these tips will show you how to keep your home clean in the future, too.

Look for Huge Problem Areas

First, you need to look at any significant problems. Identify what they are, such as damp spots, or infestations. It would help if you always were on top of these things, which is why preventative pest control is significant.

These problem areas can hinder your ability to keep your home clean. Plus, if there is moisture or mold, it could cause you to become sick.

Now more than ever, it is important to have a clean home. With COVID-19 taking hold, we need to protect ourselves and our families.

Clean Before Disinfecting

Do not just disinfect. Clean first and then disinfect. Many people who buy disinfectant wipes or sprays, use them on all surfaces. But it is better to clean the area first with soap and sponge or cloth and then apply any disinfectant.

Also, leave the disinfectant on the surfaces for about 30 seconds before wiping it. One of the surfaces that you need to clean and disinfect daily is the kitchen counter.

How to keep your home clean, keep your home free of unwanted dirt and mess, tidy your home, home organization, home cleaning

In the Kitchen

Remember to clean the areas you touch often. The kitchen is one of the rooms in which we are often and in which we touch many surfaces and objects.

So, in addition to the counter already mentioned, do not forget to clean the kitchen utensils you use, the coffee machine, the knobs on the doors and windows, the power switches and of course the cabinets and their handles. You can clean all these every day with disinfectant or hot soapy water.

Then, you should put your sponges in the washing machine. The things you use to clean other things are often filled with germs. The World Health Council has found that an average of 19.6 billion bacteria lives on kitchen sponges in an average house.

The good news is that it’s easy to get rid of these 19.6 billion bacteria in a straightforward way. You can clean them by merely throwing them in the washing machine, or you can rub them well yourself with warm soapy water.

Another tip is to use microfiber cloths because they are easy and swift to clean. By taking these additional steps, you’ll be preparing your home well!

Furniture

If you want to use furniture polish, make sure you read the labels carefully and that it is suitable for the job you want. But know that the polish is not designed to clean but to polish.

  • Some furniture items can “withstand” water. These can be cleaned with the soap solution mentioned above. Dry the surface quickly to leave no marks.
  • Next, use the furniture polish and wipe according to the instructions.
  • If it is a hydrophilic wood, then you can use liquid soap for parquet.

All-Purpose Cleaners

  • Be careful with all general purpose cleaning products. It is not always safe for every purpose. Be sure to read the labels carefully before buying them and make sure they fit your needs.
  • Do not mix cleaners! Use one at a time and follow the instructions.
  • Consider natural cleaners without chemicals.

Outside the Home

You shouldn’t neglect chores outside the home (garden, yard, deck) as they are necessary to create a more pleasant environment. The rake and broom will prevent the growth of mold after the rain, will reduce the appearance of insects and will improve the overall image of your home. Prune your plants, take care of your garden and wash the patios or decks regularly.

Cleaning the Floors

The vacuum cleaner is by far the most effective way to clean dust, bristles and debris from the floor before mopping. On wooden floors now, the brooms with a special cloth are more effective, which “pulls” the dust thanks to the static electricity and at the same time polishes the wood.

Mopping

Some mop replacements can be very effective, but no better solution has been found for when you have to get rid of the dirt that is stuck:

  • If you have tile, nothing will work more effectively for the dirt that accumulates.
  • Cloth mops are more effective than sponge mops.
  • Use warm water and a good cleanser (reread the instructions)

Washing

  • It is much easier to wash the dishes immediately after using them, as you will not have to rub the dried leftovers for hours.
  • Wet the sponge with hot water, add a little dishwashing liquid, clean each dish on both sides and then rinse well.
  • Avoid filling pots or deep dishes with water and leave them for a long time because on the one hand, they will smell and on the other hand, they can collect flies and all kinds of germs.
