Best Things to Do in South Haven, Michigan

There are so many things to do in South Haven, Michigan, but the best part is how simple everything feels. You don’t need a packed itinerary to have a great trip here, just a few good stops and some time to wander.

Best Beaches in South Haven, Michigan

The beaches are the main reason people come to South Haven, and they don’t disappoint. These are the two main public beaches in South Haven, and both are easy to access from downtown.

South Beach is the most popular, with easy access to the lighthouse and plenty of space to spread out. North Beach is also great, with lots of open areas and sand. You can rent paddleboards and kayaks on the main beach, making it super easy and convenient, and giving you another way to explore the area.

I also love visiting Pilgrim Haven Natural Area, which is a little south of town. It’s a dog-friendly area with hiking trails that lead to unique views of Lake Michigan and Dyckman Creek. You can also find a random chimney standing alone in an open field, where the old Camp Pilgrim Haven’s dining hall used to be. Pilgrim Haven also has a public beach, with some parts being very rocky and others being sandy. You’re allowed to take a few rocks with you, so spend time searching for the perfect one.

If you’re visiting in the summer, plan to go early or later in the day, especially on weekends. Parking fills up quickly, but once you’re there, it’s the kind of place you’ll want to stay for hours.

Visit Lake Arvesta Farms in South Haven

If you want something a little different than a traditional beach day, Lake Arvesta Farms is a fun option just outside of downtown South Haven. It’s a man-made lake with clear blue water, inflatable obstacle courses, and plenty of space to relax.

Walk to the South Haven Lighthouse

My family has a tradition of visiting the lighthouse on our first day, before we even check in at the place we’re staying. We buy ice cream on South Beach and then walk to the lighthouse while we eat it. It’s the perfect way to get into relaxation and vacation mode.

Walking out to the lighthouse is one of those simple things that ends up being a highlight of the trip. It’s especially worth doing in the evening when the sun starts to set over Lake Michigan.

If it’s your first time visiting South Haven, don’t skip the sunset. It’s easily one of the best parts of the trip. If you can, plan your visit around it. Downtown South Haven is small, but that’s part of the charm. Phoenix Street is lined with local shops, restaurants, and little spots you’ll end up wandering into without planning to.

It’s an easy place to spend an hour or two just walking around, grabbing a drink, or stopping for ice cream before heading back to the beach.

Go Wine Tasting Near South Haven

If you’re planning a girls’ trip or a couple’s weekend, wine tasting is an easy add-on. There are several wineries in and around South Haven, and it’s a great way to slow things down for a bit.

Even if you only stop at one, it’s one of the easiest things to do in South Haven as you stroll downtown or go for a drive. It breaks up the beach time and makes the trip feel a little more like a getaway.

I personally love 12 Corners Vineyards South Haven Tasting Room, where I bought my favorite Beach Cottage Red wine a few years back.

Visit Local Breweries in South Haven

If wine isn’t your thing, South Haven also has a few solid brewery options. Places like Three Blondes Brewing are easy, casual stops where you can grab a drink after the beach without overthinking it. Three Blondes Brewing has beer tastings, and it’s by far our favorite brewery in the area.

It’s the kind of place you go in flip-flops and stay longer than you planned.

Bike or Walk the Kal-Haven Trail

If you want to mix in something a little more active, the Kal-Haven Trail is a great option. It runs between South Haven and Kalamazoo, but even doing a short stretch gives you a nice break from the beach. There are so many beautiful stops along the way.

It’s especially good in the morning before the day gets busy.

Visit the Michigan Maritime Museum

For something different, the Michigan Maritime Museum gives you a look at the area’s history and connection to Lake Michigan.

It’s a good option if you need a break from the sun or want something a little more structured to do, especially if you’re visiting with kids.

Go on a Boat Tour

There are a couple of different options for this. Right on Water Street, there’s a marina on the Black River where you can book boat tours. You can do a daytime one, or for $10 more per person, you can do a sunset tour. There is also the Michigan Maritime Museum, which offers tours on a “pirate ship”.

Catch the Fireworks

South Haven has an amazing fireworks show to celebrate the 4th of July. They don’t usually hold it on the 4th, so watch for the date to be released around that time. I’ve never seen anything like it!

Best Restaurants in South Haven, Michigan

You can’t forget the food when thinking of things to do in South Haven. South Haven has a mix of casual beach food and local favorites. If you’re only picking one or two places, these are the ones we keep going back to.

Clementine’s

Clementine’s is a South Haven staple and one of those places you’ll hear about more than once, and it lives up to it. It’s right on Phoenix Street and is known for being casual, family-friendly, and having a wide-ranging menu. You HAVE to try their onion rings, no matter what else you order.

Captain Lou’s

Captain Lou’s is known for its riverfront location and laid-back vibe, and it’s my kids’ favorite spot. It’s especially popular in the summer, so expect a wait during peak times, but it’s a fun stop if you can time it right. From their deck, you can watch boats go down the black river and watch the drawbridge open up for bigger boats.

At night, if you’re traveling without kids, you can pop into Captain Lou’s for a late-night band. There’s often a cover charge at this time, so take cash.

Black River Tavern

The Black River Tavern has delicious appetizers and drinks. They often have comedy shows or a live band, and the atmosphere has a casual tavern feel. It’s also known for its nightlife, so check to see what’s going on during your time in South Haven.

Chomp

Chomp is a go-to for quick food, where they offer over-the-top hot dogs that leave you full and satisfied. It’s the kind of place you grab something easy and take it back to the beach or eat outside.

The Lodge

The Lodge has a cozy, rustic feel, the best menu full of delicious food, and plenty of drink choices (including beer and cocktails). They have a cool, vibey, outdoor area where they set up games like cornhole and other favorites.

It’s not in the downtown area, but worth the short drive, or you can check it out on your way back to town from Pilgrim Haven.

Maria’s Taste of Italy

Maria’s Taste of Italy has the best Italian food I have ever tasted, and I’ll always want to go back for their lasagna. If you want something filling and comforting or are looking for a spot for families or groups, this is the place to go.

Things to Do in South Haven with Kids

South Haven is an easy win for families because so much of what you’d already want to do works for kids, too. Beach days with shallow swim areas, a splash pad near South Beach, ice cream stops, and walking around downtown don’t need much planning. Plus, there’s the Michigan Maritime Museum and bike rides or walks on the trails.

If you want to mix things up, you can add in the Maritime Museum or a short bike ride. But honestly, the beach will probably be the main event.

South Haven is one of those places where you don’t need to plan much to keep kids happy.

If you’re visiting as a couple, South Haven has a slower, easy rhythm that makes it feel like a real break. Sunset walks, wine tasting, and dinner downtown are simple, but that’s kind of the point.

If there’s anything scheduled, go to Black River Tavern for a comedy show or live band.

It’s not a packed-itinerary kind of place, it’s more about slowing down and enjoying where you are. My husband and I had the best date night, laughed so much, and sang along with the band’s songs.

Best Free Things to Do in South Haven, Michigan

You don’t need to spend much to enjoy South Haven. Some of the best parts of the trip are completely free.

Beach days, walking out to the lighthouse, and catching the sunset are all simple things that end up being the highlights. The splash pad is free, too, which is amazing if you have kids!
