A Few Basic Things Every Adult Should Know How to Do

There are a few things every adult should know how to do, no matter what. If you want to live a happy, healthy, and successful life, there are some aspects of adulting that are simply not optional.

Living life to its fullest means you have to be self-sufficient and know how to take care of yourself. Since I turned 30 (OMG) a couple of weeks ago, this has been on my mind more than ever.

If you know the things that every adult should know how to do, you are on the right track. Otherwise, make a note of these things and start learning right away.

Things Every Adult Should Know How to Do

1. How to Cook at Least 5 Meals

As an adult, you should be able to feed yourself a healthy diet without any outside help. Sure, eating out may be cheap, but it isn’t always the healthiest option. Plus, if you’re on a budget or you want to ensure the right balance of nutrients in your diet, cooking from scratch is a must.

That means, at a minimum, you should be able to cook five healthy dishes completely from scratch. If you can’t do this, invest in a good cookbook or check out some Youtube cooking tutorials and practice ‘til you’ve got it down.

2. How to DIY

Every adult should know the basics of DIY – things like hanging wallpaper, putting up shelves, and unblocking sinks. Having to hire a professional every time something goes wrong with your home can get pretty expensive.

Not only will it save you money, but when you know how to tackle projects yourself, you can make quick fixes before the problem gets worse. It will also give you something productive to do when you’re bored, which is never a bad thing.

3. How to Handle Disagreements

As a fully grown adult, you should be able to disagree with people without it becoming heated. You should be able to talk to your partner about their annoying habits without it descending into a shouting match. Additionally, you should be able to negotiate with your boss without feeling like you’re going to cry or explode or do something stupid.

So many adults never learn how to do this, and at best they end up ruining relationships, at worst they find themselves talking with an attorney about the code for manslaughter or up on trial for a serious offense. That probably won’t happen to you, but being unable to calmly discuss issues and mediate a rational discussion can and will make your life worse.

4. How to Change a Tire

You should stay off the road if you don’t know how to change a tire. You never know when it will happen or if someone will be available to help you. Avoid being stranded by learning how to change a tire on your own.

This is a basic that will help get you out of tough situations on the road. Plus, it will save you a bunch of money since you can avoid calling a professional for help.

5. How to do Your Taxes

If you’re an adult and you don’t know how to do your taxes, you’re in a tough spot. The IRS takes a very dim review on incorrect tax returns and they will come down hard on you.

You must get it together and understand what is required of you. These days there are various software packages to make the process simpler, but you’ll still need to learn the basics.

5 Easy Ways To Get Your Home Back In Order

For one reason or another, you may find that your home doesn’t stay looking the way that you should. Sometimes, life takes over and things get messy. Your home can start to get cluttered and, before you know it, it’s out of hand and you don’t know how to get your home back in order.

Other times, you may have had a get together or event at your home that caused a mess. You may be lost on where to start with getting your home back in order, then, too.

Either way, both instances can be stressful. To help alleviate your stress, use these tips to get your home back in order.

How To Get Your Home Back In Order

1. Purge the Entire House

To start with, get rid of anything you don’t need or want anymore. If you know that you’ve accumulated a lot of things over the years, clutter clearing can be essential.

This might be the starting point that you can work from. Once you’ve cleared the rooms out, it should feel so much more organized. Then, you can choose to work on some of the bigger jobs.

2. Get The Carpets Cleaned

Another thing that you might want to think about doing is getting the carpets cleaned. Carpets can get really messy and grubby over the months and years, and a good clean will help them. It might be a good idea to hire a professional to do this for you every so often.

3. Freshen Up The Paint

Freshening up the paint is an easy way to get your home back in order. Your rooms will seem brighter and cleaner after a coat of pain. You could even consider painting the outside of your home, too.

4. Call In The Experts

From here, you could think about getting experts in to help you. Sometimes, you’re just not going to get things to the standard that you’d like. This is why there are professionals in the field, so utilize them when you need to.

From smoke damage restoration to water damage to AC Repair Services, it’s better to ask them for help. That way, your home can be put back to the standard it once was. Plus, you can rest assured that the job was done correctly.

5. Do Something Drastic

If you know that you’re fed up with the way your home looks and you want to be able to make some changes, it’s time to get started. You could change up the rooms, rip out different fittings, or consider a complete redo of the house. It can be a lot of work, but if you know you want to make it happen, it can be just what you need to get your home back in order.

Get Your Home Back In Order

3 Ways To Be A Better & More Competent Caregiver

Caring for a family member or someone close to you can be a tough ask. It not only asks you to reorient your schedule but to cope with some difficult circumstances. You will feel like there is always more to do, and more things to learn and understand. Even so, you likely want to become a better & more competent caregiver to your loved one.

There are many who act as daily caregivers for someone close to them. It’s a tough job, and it takes time. Most personal caregivers don’t have much training in this field either, making it even more difficult.

Personal caregivers do what they believe is right, try their hardest every day, and spend time trying to become a better & more competent caregiver. For this reason, they unlock quality of life for those they care about and are seen as an absolute blessing.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t take away from how difficult the job can be in the first place. For this reason, it’s important that caregivers don’t force themselves to carry the entire world on their shoulders, enlisting help where necessary, and using methods to try and become a better & more competent caregiver.

If you’re reading this post, you’re no doubt much more caring and effective than you’re giving yourself credit for. These tips can help you even further.

How to Become a Better & More Competent Caregiver

1. Use Government Programs To Help You

Listing yourself as a caregiver can often help you unlock access to a range of supplementary programs to make your life easier. This might involve a ‘meals on wheels’ delivery service to make cooking and cleanup much easier.

There are also many excellent support programs (such as one-off payments for heating the home in winter) that you can look into. Speak to your local government about what support options you have – they could make your life much easier.

2. Use The Professionals

It’s fine to admit that a caregiving job may not be totally in your hands anymore. Or, may need to spend more time on other areas of your life. This is where services that offer in-home and professional care for seniors could be effective.

Having a qualified professional take over your most pressing duties and keep up with a daily standard of care that is hard to find elsewhere while still keeping you involved in the process could be a real lifesaver. Many caregivers find they can live a real life outside of caregiving with this kind of aid to support them.

3. Use Covid-Protective Measures

Caregiving has become even more difficult in the midst of the Covid pandemic. Being unable to head out as often, the limited socialization, and the worry of getting sick has been on our minds for almost a year now. However, it’s important to somewhat automate these Covid concessions to make them easier to deal with.

Keeping masks, gloves, disinfectant and antibacterial spray can help you and the person you care for stay safe and healthy. It’s best to not take any chances.

Be a Better & More Competent Caregiver

Being a caregiver is hard work, but you can make it a little easier on yourself. You don’t have to sacrifice the standard of care you give, either. Use these tips to become a better & more competent caregiver. Sometimes understanding and using your resources is all it takes.

Do you have any other tips to add to this? Let me know in the comments!

How to Make an Easy Last-Minute Valentine’s Card Box

I’m that mom who sees the note about the class Valentine’s party and only reads halfway through. I get the date and the number of Valentine’s cards we need, and that’s about it. Well, this time, my quick-scan method failed me because I didn’t realize we needed a Valentine’s card box!

As we were getting all of the Valentine’s Day stuff packed up for the next day, I re-read the note to make sure we weren’t forgetting anything. I’m sure you can see where I’m going with this. My preschooler needed a Valentine’s card box for school. Oops.

No worries, though. He had a cute Valentine’s card box for his class party that we made without running out to the store. Plus, it was super easy to make.

Valentine's Card Box

How to Make a Valentines Card Box

Step 1: Find a box that is big enough to hold Valentine’s Day treats and cards.

You can use literally any box you have. We used a pop-tart box. There are only 10 kids in his class so his didn’t need to be very big.

Step 2: Paint the box or cover it with paper.

It took a couple of coats of paint to hide the pop-tart logo. I let it dry in between each coat but it didn’t take long.

For some reason, the sides of the box were giving us the most trouble (or maybe I was just over it). So, we cut cute craft paper and placed it on each end. We didn’t do anything with the bottom of the box.

Step 3: Add stickers and other embellishments.

We had some Valentine’s stickers so my little guy put stickers all over the box. You could also cut hearts out of different colored paper and glue those to the box.

We cut his name out of cute paper and glued that on, too. Use whatever you have and be creative. Other ideas include letting your child paint designs on the box or adding glitter.

Step 4: Cut a hole in the top.

Make sure the hole is big enough to fit treats through and not just cards.

Valentine's Card Box

While this Valentine’s card box was nowhere near perfect, my little guy loved it. Sometimes it is all about taking the time to help them create something rather than worrying about a perfect result. Sure, I could have run out to Target and hoped they had some left, but this ended up being so much more fun and I didn’t have to change out of my sweatpants.

How to Make an Easy Last-Minute Valentine's Card Box, Valentine's Card Box

Please tell me I’m not the only mom who does everything last minute?! And if you are a parent who plans ahead and already has their child’s Valentine’s card box ready, I’d love to see it!

5 Of The Best Ways You Can Save Money On Household Bills

Household bills can quickly add up, and you may feel like there is no way to reduce the financial burden. We tend to let the payments leave our accounts each month without a second thought because the bills must be paid. While it is true that the bills must be paid, there are ways you can save money on household bills each month.

How to Save Money On Household Bills

1. Meal Planning

Groceries are a big household expense each month (or week). Sometimes, if we don’t spend time thinking about it beforehand, we can spend more than we need to. This is where meal planning can save you a fortune.

It’s all about investing a little time into planning your week. You have to think about the ingredients you already have and which meals you can make out of them, and then writing a list for the rest.

That is the key point. The list is what helps you spend just what you need to. Doing this each week could save you a small fortune over the course of a year.

*Click here for a FREE meal plan printable.*

2. Making Your Home More Energy Efficient

Energy bills can be astronomical at certain times of the year. Check your house and consider if it is energy efficient or if it is costing you extra money each month.

Check out things like insulation and whether your windows are energy efficient. This is when you may want to update your windows with replacement vinyl windows to help you keep heat in.

Even updating some older appliances could help save you some money. This is because, in theory, having an eco-friendly home should reduce the amount of energy you use.

3. Considering an Eco-friendly Life

You could take the whole eco-friendly thing one step further and try to reduce your outings. This might mean setting up a vegetable patch and growing your own food. Or, it could mean trying to generate your own water supply.

If it’s something you want further information on, then seek out some advice. Other things to consider would be saving your rainwater, generating a supply for things like watering your garden.

4. Switching Suppliers

We all know there are good deals out there, but some people have the impression that switching suppliers takes time, effort, and could even cost more.

But, there are websites to compare deals that can help you out. They compare all the suppliers and work out the cost based on your usage. Do this often to make sure you are not overspending.

5. Reduce Luxuries

Things like TV packages and the highest speed internet can be costly over time. If you aren’t using what you are paying for, then reduce those packages.

Reducing the packages might mean reducing the download amount on your internet or getting rid of channels on your TV package. If you don’t use it, you won’t miss it. You will enjoy the extra money in your pocket, though.

Save Money on household bills

These changes could make a huge difference and help save money on household bills. You work hard for your money, and you should save as much as you can. What are some ways that you have learned to save money on household bills? Tell me about it in the comments!

6 Effective Ways to Make Sure Your Home is Ready For Spring

With temperatures already getting warmer and the sunset coming later, it won’t be long until spring is upon us. Making the most of it means you should make sure your home is ready for spring. You don’t want to wait until the warmer weather is here to get started or you’ll miss out on some of the beautiful days.

***This post contains affiliate links. It costs you nothing extra, but I may receive a small commission.***

How to Ensure Your Home is Ready For Spring

1. Redesign Your Yard and Garden

It’s tricky to keep your yard and garden well-maintained when it’s raining or there’s snow on the ground, so you’ll probably have a few outdoor tasks to complete before spring arrives. Once you’ve raked the leaves, weeded the flowerbeds, and pruned overhanging branches, why not take the opportunity to redesign?

Changing the layout, resealing paving, and adding some new features can breathe new life into your space. What’s more – revamping outdoor furniture, adding some patio heaters, or installing sunken seating will ensure you can make the most of your yard this spring.

2. Purify the Air

Spring can be the most troublesome time of year for allergy-sufferers, so you’ll want to do everything you can to keep your home free from contaminants. Adding an air purifier or air scrubber to your home, or changing the filters on existing appliances can have a big impact on the quality of the air inside your home. By removing pollutants, you can minimize allergy symptoms and truly enjoy the fresh air.

3. Tackle Pests

Pests can affect your property at any time of year, but a change of season can mean that different pests emerge. Fortunately, a local pest control company can provide all the help you need.

Instead of waiting for an infestation to occur, be proactive when it comes to pest control. A qualified exterminator will be able to tell you which areas of your home are most at risk, which means you can take preventative action to stop pests from taking up residence.

4. Update Window Dressings

Changing curtains and blinds is an easy way to update your décor with minimal effort. Switching to a lighter color is the perfect way to reflect the changing seasons and a lighter color scheme will be perfect for springtime.

However, you may want to ensure that blinds and curtains are fitted with blackout fabric by the time spring arrives. When the sun rises earlier, it can affect your sleep schedule, but blackout blinds and curtains will ensure you get the rest you need.

5. Clear Gutters

Gutters fill up quickly during fall and winter, which increases the risk of leaks and damage. When leaves block the gutters, water can easily overflow and cause damage to your property. Taking the time to clean out the gutters, or hiring a gutter cleaning service, will ensure the outdoor drainage system is working perfectly.

6. Create a Home Maintenance Schedule

Keeping your property in great condition is a year-round commitment, and there are lots of different jobs to consider. To make things easier, why not create your own custom home maintenance schedule? This will ensure you’ve got time to plan, protect your property, and make the most of every season.

4 Practical Ways to Prepare Your Home for Extreme Weather

During extreme weather, the elements can threaten our homes and put us at risk of damage. In many cases, protecting your home against natural disasters and the elements can be simple. However, many Americans are all too aware that extreme weather conditions can be devastating, and the damage can be immeasurable.

So how can you protect your home against the elements and survive the wrath of Mother Nature when it hits?

How to Prepare Your Home for Extreme Weather

1. Get Insurance or Check Your Current Policy

One of the best ways to protect yourself is to make sure your home and all your possessions are insured. Make sure to read the small print and know exactly what is covered and go over the limitations.

You should take pictures regularly of what you own and back it up. Keeping records is the best way to show the insurance company what you own and what has been damaged.

2. Familiarize Yourself With Repair Companies

Knowing a reliable repair company will be the best way to help you get back on track after a natural disaster. Part of the issue is negotiating between contractors and insurance companies, and this task can often seem worse than what you are facing.

However, finding a company that can help you with Water Damage Restoration or repairs after wind or water damage who will be able to work with the insurance company can help you start to find your way again in the aftermath of a damaging event.

3. Prepare For Anything

Many counties and states have guides on preparing for geological events that frequently affect the local area. These guides range from hurricanes to earthquakes and extreme heat levels to rising water from flooding.

Visiting your local government’s website will give you information on how to prepare your home for different weather conditions. It will give you an insight into how frequently this type of extreme weather can occur, too.

Knowing when to expect extreme weather conditions and how best to protect yourself and your home will help you put plans in place. Don’t forget to keep local weather alerts on your smartphone to be kept up to date with any new and sudden weather changes.

4. Emergency Supplies

Keeping your home well-stocked with supplies can give you a head start if the worst-case scenario happens. Stocking up on bottled water, canned foods or long-life food supplies that can be eaten as they are will give you something to fall back. While it isn’t likely, you don’t want to be without if food and water supplies are disrupted.

A shovel for snow or in the aftermath of high winds can be useful. De-icer for cold temperatures is also useful, as well as spare batteries, a generator, and torches to help you to see. Consider packing a survival kit including blankets, waterproof outerwear, first aid kit, socks, shoes, torch, and tools that you can easily access.

Extreme Weather, prepare your home

You never know when extreme weather may cause issues for you. In the event of a disaster, being prepared can help you manage those initial few hours after an extreme weather event or help others who may not have been so lucky.

Is there anything you would add to this list? Tell me about it in the comments!

12 Proven Ways You Can Make Your Family Life Easier and Happier

Family life has its challenges. It doesn’t matter where you live or how much money you have, you’re probably going to run into some struggles. That being said, there are numerous ways you can make your family life easier and more enjoyable.

If you’re not happy with the way things are for you right now, or you know you could do with less stress and more joy, try some of these suggestions!

How to Make Your Family Life Easier and Happier

Make Sure Everybody Has Responsibility

One of the best ways to make your life easier and more enjoyable is to make sure everybody has responsibility. They should have responsibility for their own space as well as the house in general.

If your teens have had friends over, make sure they know it’s their responsibility to tidy up. If they have been cooking or made a mess some other way, ensure you raise them knowing that it’s their job to clean it.

It’s also a good idea to ensure that your family has equal responsibility when it comes to any pets. Feeding, grooming, and walking pets, shouldn’t just be your job. Responsibility for both the house and pets will make you a stronger family unit and ensure your life is far more enjoyable.

Eat One Meal Together Each Day

Eating one meal together each day might not seem possible at first. After all, you have work, school, and other things going on. However, the meal doesn’t have to be dinner.

You could all have breakfast together, or if it’s possible you could have lunch together. If you can find the time to put all of your devices and work away and spend time eating together for a short amount of time every day, you will notice so many benefits. Studies have proven that doing this can help kids perform better at school, will help them avoid peer pressure, and more.

It doesn’t matter what you want to eat, whether you’ve got the best frozen Chinese food out of the freezer for a homemade takeaway, or you want to make your own pizzas and everyone gets a slice of each. As long as you’re taking the time to be together while eating, you’ll reap the benefits of a family mealtime.

At our house, we all eat dinner together each evening. We don’t allow phones or other electronic devices during this time, and we make it a point to talk about our day. One person begins by asking someone else, “What was the best part of your day?”, and the person being asked answers the question.

Then, the person who just answered the question will ask the next person the same question. We do this until everyone has talked about their day. It usually lasts the entire time because it really gets the kids talking.

Eat The Same Things Each Week

Eating the same things each week will help you get a handle on food prep, as well as your shopping. Eating the same meals on corresponding days throughout the week can help you to make mealtimes more of a fun tradition, too. You can keep your food budget down this way and ensure food shopping is more effective.

Reduce Time Doing Laundry and Ironing

Doing laundry and ironing can feel like it takes ages to complete. However, with the help of items like ironing spray, you can minimize the time spent doing this and ensure your family remains clean and tidy.

It’ll help your clothes last longer, too. There’s no need to do a full wash after every single wear.

Child Proof Your Home

If you ever worry about your children hurting themselves at home, it’s a good reason to spend time childproofing your home. Here are some ways you can do this:

  • Ensure there’s nothing your children can get tangled up in, such as blind cords.
  • Avoid leaving children unattended if you have ponds, pools, and other bodies of water in the yard. It only needs to be shallow to suffer the devastating consequences.
  • Get down to their level and see if you can spot any hazards.
  • Cover up sharp corners.
  • Avoid having hard floors with no rugs.
  • Use dark colors and ensure materials wipe clean.

Find Fun Things To Do Together

Doing fun things together brings you closer together as a family. There are so many more things out there you can do instead of just watching TV or playing on electronics!

Why not go on hikes, try arts and crafts, or read together? These are the moments you will treasure when your kids have grown up. Plus, it’s always a good idea to avoid too much screen time.

Avoid Cluttering Up Your Home

When you have a family, the home can become easily cluttered. If you need help figuring out how to improve this, take a look at Marie Kondo on Netflix.

Keeping the things that truly bring you joy will make your home a tidier, happier place. Rather than buying your kids useless toys that they will use once and forget about (not to mention the plastic use and environmental impact this has), invest in experiences for them and things they can use again and again.

Download Apps

Apps can help to give you peace of mind. Some of them will help you know where your family is if they are out with friends or elsewhere. You can even use certain apps to control different parts of the house from a remote location. You can make it look like you are home by turning on the lights, for instance, even when you’re at work.

Take A Break From The Screen

When you take a break from the screen, you’ll have less stuff cluttering up your brain. You’ll also have more time to focus on your family life and immediate surroundings. Get creative and find new things to do!

Focus On What You Can Control

Rather than worrying about what you can’t control, focus on what you can control. You won’t always be able to stop bad things from happening, but you can put things into perspective and work on the things that are in your control.

Simplify Your Wardrobe

Coming up with capsule wardrobes for each family member will have a tremendous impact on both your lives and the planet. You’ll save money, have high-quality pieces you can use again and again, and find getting dressed so much easier. This guide will help you get it right

Prioritize What’s Important To You As A Family

Different things are important to different families. Having a family motto can help you to define your values and morals and ensure your kids grow up to be great people. It’ll also allow you to better communicate with one another, and make decisions from a good place.

3 Easy Ways To Update Your Family Home

Memories are made in a family home, so it is important to update your family home whenever necessary. It should be a place that you enjoy spending time in and a place that brings peace. Plus, it should be functional for your family.

The family home can quickly get messy and unorganized, which can result in feeling overwhelmed. This feeling can interfere with the memories you could be making, and it could make it hard for you to want to relax in your home.

It can be hard to know where to start when it comes to updating your family home, though. You want the update to be uplifting and still meet new daily standards.

Luckily, you don’t have to renovate the whole home. You could update certain areas of the house to give it a new lease of life, instead.

How to Update Your Family Home

Start in the Kitchen

The kitchen is often where people will spend most of their time. Whether it is cooking for the family or sitting around the kitchen table with friends over a glass of wine, you and your guests will see it often. Companies like NVS Kitchen and Bath are specialists in creating the most beautiful kitchen areas.

Keeping your kitchen looking modern and updated can be hard if you try to do too much. An easy way to update your kitchen is to update the cabinets and countertops. Doing this will bring new life to the kitchen without gutting the entire room.

A room full of vibrancy is a great space to catch up with family and friends so pick out a style that shows off your personality. Hiring a professional such as Panda Kitchen & Bath Expo will take the weight off your shoulders. They do the work for you by designing a space that will fit all your items in a way that looks good.

Having plenty of savvy storage will ensure your sides are free to cook. It will instantly make the room look tidy and clutter-free because you will have space to put your kitchen appliances and products inside cupboards.

Move on to The living room

Another important room in a family home is the living room. To instantly bring warmth into the room, bring in a fireplace. Looking at the roaring fire will make you feel cozy, helping everyone feel relaxed while warming the whole house.

Making the fireplace a feature will change the style of the room and will draw your eyes to it. Adding tiles or wood around the fireplace can make it stand out even more. If you need to fill a gap then stacking some logs next to it will bring a modern twist.

Update the Entryway and Hallways

The entryway is often forgotten about, but it is the first room you and your guests see when they enter your home. It can set off a big impression on the rest of the house.

Changing up the wall paint and flooring to a lighter option will brighten the area, making it look larger. Adding furniture such as radiator covers or console tables will bring the room together while allowing the hallway to flow to your other rooms.

The flow is very important because otherwise, you will end up working around things to get from one part of the house to the other. Experiment with various layouts and you will understand what works best for your family’s lifestyle.
